Kim Hine was born in Tasmania, Australia and graduated from the School of Art at the University of Tasmania in 1993, majoring in painting and printmaking. After a year-long art residency and travel, Kim furthered his studies in education before moving to Singapore to teach art in 1998. Kim’s work has been exhibited in Australia, Singapore, Japan, Korea and the United States.
Kim’s distinctive style is shaped by using the process of encaustic painting whereby layers of molten wax combined with damar resin are added and then fused with heat. The surfaces of these paintings can be further manipulated through engraving and printing. Kim has extended this traditional technique by incorporating transparent paper collage to create more layering and using gouache which also blends into the molten wax. These varied processes create a dreamlike and timeless quality in his work.
